Stoptober is an annual event run to support people across England to stop smoking during the month of October.

Evidence shows that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are 5 times more likely to stop for good.

If you smoke, you generally have an increased risk of contracting respiratory infection and of more severe symptoms once infected. Stopping smoking will bring immediate benefits to your health.

what can i expect

Anyone accessing the stop smoking pathway will undertake a telephone/virtual appointment, rather than the standard face to face appointment. We offer a 12-week intervention programme. An initial appointment will last for up to 30 minutes and during this time the Stop Smoking practitioner will gain some background information on smoking history, habits, motivation, challenges and work towards setting a quit date. Follow up appointments are 15 minutes either weekly or bi-weekly depending on need. We provide 12-weeks’ worth of NRT or medication. NRT is delivered by Royal Mail postage. Medication is prescribed, which will be provided through the GP or Pharmacy.

We offer evening appointments up to 8pm as well as Saturday morning appointments to suit a busy schedule. As well as our telephone support, you may be able to get help from your local pharmacy.

Once you’re signed up, we will give you a call as soon as we can. This initial call will just go through some basic questions about the background and reasons for signing up, before looking to book your Initial consultation with the Stop Smoking Practitioner. After this, you will be supported by the Stop Smoking support for a period of 12 weeks.

how it works

1. FIRST APPOINTMENT

We will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your first appointment. During this 30 min appointment you will discuss any concerns you have about quitting, the benefits you are hoping to get from stopping smoking and how the appointments and medication work.

2. SENDING & RECEIVING NRT

Nicotine replacement therapy comes in a variety of options. You will discuss with your practitioner what type of NRT will work best for you. We will arrange for it to be posted to you, or if you are requesting medication, your practitioner will ask your GP to prescribe you this - you will then be able to pick this up from your designated pharmacy (normally with 2 -5 working days of the request being made.)

3. SETTING A QUIT DATE & QUITTING

Your Practitioner will help you plan and prepare for your quit date, taking into account any concerns or barriers you may feel towards quitting. You will have an appointment on your quit date with your practitioner to begin on your journey to becoming smoke free.

4. WEEKLY APPOINTMENTS

The course runs for a total of 12 weeks, and you will be able to receive weekly or bi-weekly appointments depending on the level of support you need. These appointments are roughly about 15 minutes in length where the practitioner will review your quit product (e.g. NRT) and discuss any concerns or struggles you might have had that week.

5. FOUR WEEK QUITTER STATUS

This is a great goal to aim for during Stoptober. Your practitioner will help adjust any NRT requirements you may have at this point.

6. TWELVE WEEK QUITTER STATUS

Congratulations you have reached the end of the course and are a fully fledged non-smoker.

7. SIX / TWELVE MONTH FOLLOW-UP

We will keep in touch to offer any further support that you might need through our other pathways. And if a relapse does occur, remember you can always come back and try again.
